Audrey Bryan - My Moments of Wonder at Andromeda

Writer: undefined

Morning broke and the alarm went off! It was field trip time again! Off this time to the Barbados Photographic Society scheduled field trip to our island’s Andromeda Gardens in the parish of St. Joseph.

My husband, Markley, and I set off on a cool cloudy morning driving through our island’s countryside and anticipating some rain showers. I thought: What an ideal opportunity for garden photos in such beautiful weather. On arrival at this botanical garden, we followed procedures and directions and anxiously set our cameras with the necessary attachments full of anticipation for shooting a variety of flora and fauna. We were truly not disappointed.

Andromeda Gardens is another photographer’s paradise. This 6-acres botanical garden with tropical plants, is a true reflection of God’s creations. You can spend all day capturing a wide variety of foliage, flowers, insects, pondside images in Andromeda’s serene and tranquil spaces.I am usually captivated by landscape images, so as I strolled through the pathways full of excitement, I carefully zoomed in on my chosen subjects.

Amidst the opportunities of beautiful colourful flowers in full bloom, the footpaths facilitated the use of my tripod and long ranged lens. You can’t help but to get closer, sometimes using the lawns as your point of rest to create those macro shots. The occasional common house - fly or pond flies, butterflies, and humming birds fluttering, gave me excellent opportunities to practice the settings on my camera. Markley got closer and crawled on the lawns and captured the intricate shapes, shadows and patterns in nature. As a more experienced photographer, he took full advantage of the scenery as he created photos beyond the simple images that nature presented. Did he want to leave? No. “Girl we comin’ back again!” was his Bajan expression.

We certainly will return to the Andromeda Gardens, a picturesque botanical wonder, a treasured gift from a lady with a big heart and tremendous love for God’s creation and for Barbados. Barbados’ wonder of tropical flora and fauna shaped with her personal touch. A place where she called her new home and lived for many years. Thank you Ms. Iris Bannochi.
